Scribd Downloader

Every time I just want to skim a public slide deck on Scribd, it turns into a whole ordeal: sign-in nag, blurred pages, and a download button that's paywalled for stuff that's already public. I'm not creating a throwaway account just to read page 3 of a manual. Since I'm lazy like that (lol 😂), I built Scribd Downloader: paste a link in, get the real document back — proper fonts, proper layout, instant PDF. No hosted version though, you run it yourself.
There are two flavors: a small Node.js/Express server you run locally (drives your own installed Chrome/Edge instead of downloading a whole extra Chromium), or a Manifest V3 browser extension grab the zip here that skips the server entirely and renders straight inside the tab. Both hit the exact same sneaky bug: Scribd ships a @media print rule to hide its own app shell when you print the live site, and my rebuilt copy was accidentally recreating that same hashed class — so every "PDF" came out blank until I found and stripped that one rule 🕵️.
Note: public documents only, this doesn't bypass real paywalls or subscriptions. If you want the full library, go support the actual uploaders on Scribd.
Tech Stack:
- Node.js & Express (local server, disk caching)
- Playwright (Chromium) (drives your existing browser instead of bundling one)
- Manifest V3 Chrome Extension (the server-free alternative)
- Vanilla HTML / CSS / JS (zero build steps, zero frameworks)
